Valérie Mairesse wears a Cartier Santos de Cartier

Banzaï (1983) is a Claude Zidi comedy built around Coluche, who plays Michel Bernardin, a troubleshooter for a travel-assistance company. Michel is engaged to Isabelle Morizet (Valérie Mairesse), an airline stewardess, and the two make promises they cannot keep: she will give up flying, he will stop being sent abroad. The lies pile up as Michel's job flings him from New York to Tunisia to Hong Kong. Zidi wrote and directed.

On Isabelle's wrist is a Cartier Santos. Louis Cartier designed the original Santos in 1904 for his friend Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Brazilian aviation pioneer, who wanted a watch he could read in the cockpit without taking his hands off the controls. It is often called the first purpose-built wristwatch. Cartier relaunched the Santos as a steel-and-gold fashion watch at the end of the 1970s, and by the early eighties it was a common sight on Parisian wrists.
