The image of Téa Leoni on set, arms folded, standing in front of studio lights with the crew working behind her, says everything about Ellie. She is the only person in Hollywood Ending (2002) who seems to be doing actual work. Woody Allen wrote and directed this comedy about Val Waxman, a washed-up director who goes psychosomatically blind during production, and Leoni plays the producer and Val's ex-wife, the one who keeps the shoot from collapsing.
Ellie wears a watch that is not clearly identifiable, just visible at her wrist in some scenes. It reads as practical and unfussy, which fits. She spends the film checking schedules, managing crises, and deciding not to walk away from an absurd situation she could easily escape. Allen's comedies are full of neurotic New Yorkers, and Ellie is the one holding everyone together. Someone in this movie has to know what time it is.
