Rocky Balboa has money for the first time in his life and no idea what to do with it. The first stretch of Rocky II, which Sylvester Stallone wrote and directed, is a spending spree: a leather jacket, a car, a house for Adrian. The money does not last. Rocky cannot get through a commercial, the endorsement work dries up, and he is back at the meatpacking plant before Mickey talks him into the gym again.

The spree runs through a jewelry shop, where Oracle of Time counts three gold Rolexes in Rocky's hands: a GMT-Master, a Day-Date, and a gem-set Lady Datejust that is plainly for Adrian. Rolex had built the GMT-Master in 1955 for Pan American pilots crossing time zones, giving it a twenty-four-hour hand and a rotating bezel for reading a second zone at a glance. Rocky has no second zone to track.

Of the three watches, the GMT-Master is the one that stays with him. Oracle of Time notes that in the scenes after the shop he is wearing it, paired with a dog collar on the other wrist.
