In a Philadelphia jewelry shop, Rocky Balboa stands at the counter in a black fedora and leather jacket, Adrian beside him, both hands full of gold Rolexes. He has just gone fifteen rounds with Apollo Creed, the prize money has landed, and Rocky II is largely about what a man who only knows how to fight does with sudden money. Sylvester Stallone wrote and directed it. Rocky shoots a commercial he cannot read off the cue cards, buys a car, and spends, while Adrian's difficult pregnancy puts her in a coma before the film's closing rematch.

The watches are in that shopping spree. Oracle of Time counts three Rolexes passing through Rocky's hands at the counter: a full gold GMT-Master, a full gold Day-Date, and a gem-set Lady Datejust. The Day-Date is the grand one, gold on its President bracelet, the day spelled out at twelve and the date at three, the model that earned the nickname the President. In the shop he only handles it; the watch Oracle of Time sees on his wrist in the scenes afterward is the gold GMT-Master.
