The Carry On films ran from 1958 to 1992, and Sidney James appeared in nineteen of them. He was the franchise's reliable lech, a man whose raised eyebrow and dirty laugh could sell a double entendre that the script hadn't even written yet. In Carry On Girls (1973), Gerald Thomas directed him as Sidney Fidler, a seaside town councillor who convinces the mayor to host a beauty pageant to boost tourism. The women's liberation movement, led by Councillor Prodworthy, declares war. Sabotage follows. It's broad, cheeky, and entirely of its time.
James wears a watch throughout, visible in scenes where Fidler is scheming at his desk or schmoozing contestants, but the brand and model haven't been identified. Sid James didn't play men who wore expensive watches. He played men who would try to sell you one. Whatever's on his wrist in Carry On Girls, it's a prop chosen to look respectable enough for a local politician and cheap enough for a man whose ambitions outrun his budget.
