Adrift (2018), Baltasar Kormakur's film, tells the true story of Tami Oldham, who survived forty-one days alone on a crippled sailboat in the Pacific after a hurricane wrecked her boat and killed its electronics. Shailene Woodley plays her. With the instruments dead, the real Tami navigated toward Hawaii with a sextant and a wristwatch, and she has been plain about how much the watch mattered. "You have to have the correct time to get longitude," she told the RNLI, recalling the week she spent unable to find it before it turned up in the bilge. "Once I got my watch, it changed everything, because then I could find my longitude." The watch the production put on Woodley is far humbler than that story implies: a small black-cased digital Casio, worn beside a red friendship bracelet in a below-deck cabin scene. It never gets a clean close-up, so the exact model stays out of reach, though it has the look of one of Casio's solar models. For a film whose survival hinges on a watch keeping accurate time, the prop is the cheapest, most reliable kind there is.
