Adrift is Baltasar Kormákur's 2018 film of a true story: in 1983, Tami Oldham and her fiancé Richard Sharp sailed a yacht from Tahiti toward San Diego and ran into Hurricane Raymond in the open Pacific. Sam Claflin plays Sharp, and on his wrist is a Seiko SKX009, the blue-and-red 'Pepsi' diver, on a steel Jubilee bracelet. It is one of the best-loved cheap dive watches ever made: 200 meters of water resistance, an automatic 7S26 movement, a street price around two hundred dollars, and a following that only grew after Seiko discontinued it in 2019.

There is one problem. The SKX009 came out in 1996, and Adrift is set in 1983, which makes the watch on Sharp's wrist thirteen years too young for the story. Seiko did sell a Pepsi diver a 1983 sailor could have worn, the 6309, and it looks close enough that most viewers would never catch the difference. The production used the modern one anyway, and we know it for certain because a collector who later bought the actual screen-worn watches said so online: a Seiko SKX009 with a Pepsi dial, the one from Sam Claflin's wrist.
