In Susanne Bier's Love Is All You Need, the wedding is the easy part. Patrick, played by Sebastian Jessen, is the groom, with an Italian destination wedding to Astrid waiting for him on the coast, lemon trees and a blue bay behind the whole affair. The hard part is the parents. Patrick's father is Philip, a widowed Englishman who has spent years alone in Denmark, and Astrid's mother is Ida, a Danish hairdresser coming out of chemotherapy whose husband has just left her for a younger woman. Bier's film is less about the couple at the altar than about these two bruised adults circling each other in the Italian sun, and Patrick is the reason they are all in the same country in the first place.
On Patrick's wrist is a Georg Jensen Koppel Dual Time, champagne dial on a leather strap. It is about as Danish as a watch can be. Georg Jensen has made silver in Copenhagen since 1904, and the Koppel line carries the name of Henning Koppel, the sculptor behind some of the firm's most famous postwar silver, who died in 1981. The Koppel was Georg Jensen's first men's watch, launched in 1977, the work of a designer who pared a wristwatch down the way he pared down a silver pitcher. This version adds a second time zone on a fourth central hand, a sensible thing for a Dane to be wearing at his own wedding a thousand miles south of home.
