Ryan Reynolds wears a Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon (replica)

Thirty-four seconds into The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017), before a word of plot, the camera goes in close on a Patek Philippe. The wrist belongs to Michael Bryce, Ryan Reynolds' "triple-A rated executive protection agent," shown at the top of his game in a film that will spend the next two hours dismantling him. After a client dies on his watch, the disgraced Bryce ends up escorting Samuel L. Jackson's hitman Darius Kincaid to the International Criminal Court to testify against a dictator, in Patrick Hughes' buddy action comedy.

The watch in that opening close-up is meant to read as a Sky Moon Tourbillon, the most complicated wristwatch Patek Philippe has ever built: a double-faced grand complication with twelve functions, a night-sky chart on its reverse, and a price beyond a million dollars. GQ's movie-watch survey described the screen version as "a lesser-spotted Patek, a Sky Moon Tourbillon, with a 42mm platinum case and dramatic black dial with red detailing."

Look closer, as one watch-spotting analysis did, and the prop gives itself away. The watch on Reynolds' wrist carries two pushers at 2 and 4 plus a crown at 3 o'clock, a configuration the real Sky Moon Tourbillon does not have, which makes the screen piece a replica. The sources cannot even agree on which reference it imitates: GQ calls it a 6002, the frame analysis says a 5002P-010, of which only three examples were ever assembled. Either way, no production was strapping the real thing to an actor for a stunt comedy. GQ's verdict still stands: "Perfect for a hitman's bodyguard, then."
