By the time the camera gets this close to Charles in Old, the 2021 M. Night Shyamalan film, he is holding a knife. Rufus Sewell plays him as a cardiac surgeon who arrives on the beach vain and brittle and leaves it, a few aging hours later, paranoid and dangerous. We see him at the waist, a bone-handled folding knife open in both hands, a patterned shirt, checked shorts. On his right wrist is a watch on a steel bracelet.
And that is nearly all we can say about it. The watch has rotated on his wrist so the dial faces down and away from the camera. What stays in view is the bracelet, a band of brushed steel links, and the curved edge of a steel case, never the dial and never a name. It is plainly a real watch, the sort a hospital chief of medicine might wear, but the film never shows us its face, and no one has pinned it down.
There is something fitting in that. Charles spends the whole film insisting on his own importance, his surgeon's title and the respect he believes he is owed, even as his mind comes apart and the beach turns him into a man his own family backs away from. A status watch you cannot quite read is exactly the watch for him, an object that says it matters without ever saying what it is.
