On a beach in Old, the 2021 M. Night Shyamalan film, a six-year-old boy named Trent lies down in the sun, and by the time the camera finds him again he is fifteen. The beach does that. Anyone who stays on it ages about two years for every hour, so a single afternoon swallows a whole childhood. Alex Wolff plays Trent at fifteen, sprawled on a striped towel with the slack, stunned look of a boy whose body has outrun him. On his wrist, far too small now for the arm it circles, is a watch.

It is a Freestyle Shark, the cheap and near-indestructible digital watch that surfers and schoolkids have worn since the 1980s. This one is a child's version, a green case on a pink printed strap, the kind of thing a six-year-old picks out for himself. The blogs that track movie props call it a Freestyle Shark, and the shape is right, the round case and the small rectangular screen and the soft rubber band, though the candy colors here do not match the plain black model they name. The little screen still counts ordinary seconds, sixty to the minute, while the body wearing it burns through a year every half hour.

That is what makes a watch almost unbearable to see in this particular movie. Old measures time through bodies instead of clocks. The horror is not a number on a screen, it is a sandcastle that will not last and children who will not stay children. So an actual timepiece on Trent's wrist lands like a small shock. He buckled it on that morning as a little boy, and now it bites into the wrist of a fifteen-year-old, a toy watch swallowed by the arm it was meant to fit.
