The Trouble with Harry was Shirley MacLaine's first film and one of Hitchcock's most relaxed. He spent the 1955 production shooting in the Vermont autumn, and the result feels more like a picnic than a thriller — the body that keeps appearing and disappearing is treated as a social inconvenience rather than a horror. Royal Dano plays Calvin Wiggs, the local deputy sheriff who should, in theory, be the person most alarmed by a corpse in the woods. Instead, he is as unhurried as everyone else.
His steel watch has not been identified. The available image is a general film backdrop and does not show the watch. Dano was a distinctive presence — tall, gaunt, with a face that belonged in a daguerreotype — and he specialized in playing authority figures who look like they wandered in from an older century. A deputy sheriff's watch in a 1955 Hitchcock comedy would be nothing fancy, just something functional on the wrist of a man who has no crimes to investigate and knows it.
