Robert Shaw wears a Rolex GMT-Master

John Frankenheimer directed Black Sunday (1977) from Thomas Harris's debut novel, adapted by Ernest Lehman, Kenneth Ross, and Ivan Moffat. Harris would later create Hannibal Lecter; this 1975 book about a Black September plot to bomb the Super Bowl came first, and it already showed his procedural patience. Bruce Dern plays Michael Lander, the damaged Vietnam veteran flying the Goodyear blimp for the attack; Marthe Keller is the Palestinian operative Dahlia; and Robert Shaw is Major David Kabakov, the Israeli intelligence officer hunting them.

Kabakov wears a Rolex GMT-Master 'Root Beer,' reference 1675, its bezel in the brown-and-gold tones that earned the nickname and set it apart from the more common red-and-blue Pepsi. Rolex built the first GMT-Master, reference 6542, in 1954 with Pan American Airways so pilots could track a second time zone; by the mid-1970s the 1675 had added crown guards and a sturdier case. According to IMDb, the Root Beer was not a costume choice at all: it was Frankenheimer's own prized Rolex.
