Peter Capaldi wears a Casio C-701

Peter Capaldi was twenty-five when he made Local Hero, three decades before he became the twelfth Doctor. He plays Danny Oldsen, a young Knox Oil assistant sent to help an American executive talk a Scottish fishing village into selling itself to an oil company. Danny wears a Casio C-701, the metal-cased calculator watch Casio built around its keypad module at the start of the 1980s. A calculator on the wrist was a genuinely modern thing to own in 1983. The same film puts a plain gold dress watch on the reclusive Knox chairman Happer, who would rather read the night sky through a telescope than buy a village.
