In a sunlit garden in Mortdecai, Georgina Krampf sits on an ornate iron bench in a navy silk blouse, leaning toward a man in a pale linen suit and a panama hat. On her left wrist, resting on her knee, is a round watch with a glossy red bezel and a plain white dial that the sun has turned into a blank disc. Olivia Munn plays Georgina, the daughter of American art collector Milton Krampf, and her work in the film is to get close to Charlie Mortdecai.
Mortdecai, David Koepp's 2015 caper with Johnny Depp as the debt-ridden art dealer of the title, turns on a stolen Goya, a pastiche of the painter's 1805 Portrait of the Marchioness of Santa Cruz said to hide the code to a bank account holding a cache of Nazi gold. Georgina seduces Mortdecai at her father's estate while her real partner, Emil Strago, lifts the canvas. The film later reveals she has been working with Strago all along.
The watch gives up nothing. Its red bezel and white dial read as a sporty fashion piece rather than anything from a jeweler, but no maker's mark is legible in the frame and no public record names it. In a film built around a painting worth a fortune and a code worth more, the watch on the wrist of the woman at the center of the theft is the one object on screen that cannot be identified or priced.
