Cristina Peck loses her husband and two daughters in a hit-and-run. Naomi Watts plays the role in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's 21 Grams (2003) as a woman dismantled by grief who turns to drugs and vengeance. The film tells its story out of order, cutting between the before and after so the audience sees Cristina as both the happy suburban mother and the hollowed-out survivor, sometimes in the same scene. Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro round out the triangle as the dying man who receives her husband's heart and the born-again ex-con who was driving the car.
Watts wears a Franck Muller Casablanca, a Geneva-made luxury watch with an Art Deco tonneau case and bold Arabic numerals. The Casablanca is named after the 1942 film and typically runs between $5,000 and $20,000 depending on the version. On Cristina before the accident, it reads as the watch of an upper-middle-class woman with a comfortable life. After the accident, it becomes one of those details that persists while everything else falls apart. The watch stays the same. The person wearing it doesn't.
