Joubert is the most polite killer in 1970s cinema. Max von Sydow plays a freelance assassin in Three Days of the Condor (1975) who treats murder as a trade, nothing personal. He is hired to eliminate a group of CIA analysts, including Robert Redford's Joseph Turner, and he goes about it with the quiet efficiency of a plumber fixing a leak. Von Sydow gives the character a strange warmth — Joubert has no ideology, no grudge, no anger. He kills because someone pays him to, and he is very good at it. By the end of the film, he offers Turner advice about staying alive, which is the closest he comes to sentiment.
His watch is not visible in the available image, which shows him in a trench coat, hat, and gloves on a dark New York street. For a European freelance assassin in a 1975 film, the watch could be anything from a discreet dress piece to nothing at all — Joubert is not the kind of man who advertises.
