The real Daniel Lugo is on Florida's death row. He led the Sun Gym gang, a crew of Miami bodybuilders who kidnapped a businessman named Marc Schiller in 1994, held and tortured him for weeks until he signed over everything he owned, and went on to murder two more people. Michael Bay turned the case into a 2013 dark comedy, with Mark Wahlberg playing Lugo as a self-improvement obsessive who is sure the good life is being kept from him. Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie play the gang, and Tony Shalhoub plays the victim.

On Lugo's wrist is a yellow-gold Rolex Day-Date with a mother-of-pearl dial and a diamond-set bezel. The Day-Date is the one Rolex makes only in precious metal: gold or platinum, never steel, worn on the solid 'President' bracelet, with the day spelled out across the top of the dial. It is the watch a man buys to announce he has arrived, which is exactly the arrival Lugo believed he was owed.

During the actual case, one of Lugo's accomplices took to wearing the victim's Rolex. The film attribution is thinner: the yellow-gold Day-Date is logged by a French watch site, and read off the screen as the reference 118348 by a YouTube channel and a forum thread, with no clear shot to confirm it. The configuration is specific and consistent, but the sighting is reported rather than nailed down.
