In Jaws: The Revenge, Mario Van Peebles plays Jake, a marine biologist finishing his PhD alongside Michael Brody in the Bahamas. When the great white that haunted the Brody family turns up in warm water where it has no business being, Jake is the one who wants to study the shark rather than flee it, and most of his screen time puts him on or beside the boats.

The watch suits that life. On his left wrist, on a ribbed rubber dive strap, sits a black analog diver, and one detail settles the identification: a round pod on the left flank of the case at 9 o'clock. That pod is a pressure sensor, and putting one on an analog dive watch was a Citizen idea no rival matched at the time. It marks this as a Citizen Aqualand, the model Citizen launched in 1985 as the first wristwatch to read depth electronically. Under the pod, a metal membrane over a piezoelectric element turns water pressure into a depth reading on the dial, which made the Aqualand a working dive instrument rather than a timer with a rotating bezel.

Plenty of working divers trusted it. The Aqualand became issued kit for Royal Australian Navy clearance divers and showed up on US Navy and Air Force operators through the late 1980s and 1990s. Citizen only folded the line into its new Promaster family in 1989, so in a 1987 film this is the original, first-generation Aqualand, from before the Promaster name existed. The frame is soft, but that sensor pod is unmistakable, and no other dive watch of the period wore one.
