LL Cool J wears an Adidas Chronograph

On a remote training island, late in the night, LL Cool J's character throws his watch to the ground, done with it. The shot that holds is not on his face but on the watch itself, a tight macro that fills the frame as it lands, and for a second Mindhunters stops being a thriller and becomes a product photograph. Renny Harlin's 2004 film follows a class of FBI profiler trainees stranded on that island and killed off one at a time by someone who marks each death with a broken clock, so a discarded watch in close-up is the kind of image the movie keeps returning to. LL Cool J plays Gabe Jensen, a profiler brought along to observe instructor Jake Harris, played by Val Kilmer.

What that macro reveals is an Adidas chronograph, and the dial leaves no doubt. The trefoil logo and the lowercase adidas wordmark sit at the four o'clock side of the face, with 20 ATM printed beneath them, a 200-meter rating that is far more dive watch than fashion watch. It is a true three-register chronograph, one subdial marked 1/10s for a tenth-of-a-second timer, a tachymeter scale running the flange. This is sportier hardware than you expect on a wrist in an FBI movie, a stopwatch dressed up as a daily watch. It is also period-correct in a way that is easy to miss. Adidas made its own watches in the early 2000s, before it licensed the name to Fossil in 2006, so a 2004 film catches the brand in its in-house era rather than the later Adidas Originals line most people picture. The exact model never resolves in the frame, so the watch stays at the brand, and the dial does the rest, telling you who made it without a line of dialogue.
