Jonny Lee Miller wears a Diesel

Mindhunters stops to look at a wrist. Renny Harlin's 2004 thriller strands a class of FBI profiling trainees on an isolated island for a war-game exercise, then kills them off one by one - And Then There Were None with forensics kits. In a tight insert on the wrist of trainee Lucas Harper, played by Jonny Lee Miller, the dial fills the frame long enough to read the one word printed across it: DIESEL.

It's a square, cushion-cased fashion watch on a doubled brown leather strap, the kind made to be seen from across a room. The pale dial carries a ring of fine hash marks, blued hands, a fleck of orange at twelve, and a small date display down at six, all set in a gunmetal case with a knurled, coin-edge crown. Diesel isn't a watchmaker in any real sense - the Italian clothing label founded by Renzo Rosso licenses its name to Fossil Group, which has built its watches since 1999, oversized and loud and aimed at a young buyer who wants the look. No model name is on the dial, so I can't take it past the brand.

There's a small irony in the choice. Lucas trains to read the faintest detail off a body or a room, the smudge nobody else notices, and the watch on his wrist is the least subtle thing on the island.
