Bobby Duran married a Cuban revolutionary. She believes in the cause, and Lena Olin plays her as someone who means it, which makes it harder when she starts falling for an American gambler who believes in nothing at all. Sydney Pollack's Havana (1990) is set during the final days of the Batista regime, and Robert Redford's Jack Weil has come to Cuba for a high-stakes poker game. He stays because of Bobby.
The film was Pollack and Redford's seventh collaboration, and it flopped. Audiences in 1990 did not want a two-and-a-half-hour romantic drama about pre-Castro Cuba. Olin gives a performance that deserved a better reception. Bobby wears a watch in some scenes, but the brand has not been identified. In a film where everyone is calculating which way Cuba is about to fall, Bobby is the one character whose stakes are personal and political at the same time.
