The Moon Thieves is a Hong Kong heist film where the loot is watches. Three timepieces once owned by Pablo Picasso surface in a Tokyo dealership, and the job is to steal them and leave plausible replicas behind; hanging over the whole scheme is a fourth prize, a watch said to be the lost Moonwatch that Buzz Aldrin wore on the moon. Steve Yuen directed it as a Chinese New Year release, in theaters February 9, 2024, with three members of the Cantopop group MIRROR in the cast: Edan Lui as Vincent Ma, a counterfeiter of antique watches, Anson Lo as the locksmith, and Keung To as Uncle. It finished as the fifth highest grossing Hong Kong film of 2024, taking more than 27.5 million Hong Kong dollars.
Keung To plays Uncle in a special-appearance billing: the arrogant, unhinged son of a dead underworld watch dealer, holding onto his father's nickname while pushing out his father's old subordinates. A client of his stolen-goods operation wants the Picasso set, so Uncle brings in Chief, played by Louis Cheung, to put the team together with Vincent. On Uncle's wrist is an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in steel with a white dial.
The Royal Oak came from Gerald Genta, the designer who would later draw the Patek Philippe Nautilus. Audemars Piguet presented it at Baselworld in 1972 with exposed screw heads, an integrated steel bracelet, and a case inspired by traditional diving helmets, and it is widely considered the first luxury sports watch in the world. No source has pinned down which Royal Oak Uncle wears; the published identification stops at the steel and the white dial.
