Francis Lawrence's Constantine (2005) casts Keanu Reeves as John Constantine, an occult detective who sees the angels and demons passing as humans and exorcises half-breeds across Los Angeles in the hope of buying his way out of damnation. He chain-smokes, wears a rumpled black suit, and treats the supernatural with the weariness of a man who has done it too long.
His watch gets a hero close-up most film watches never earn, shot tight against a blood-smeared surface, the dial filling the frame and legibly reading ORIS above the center and AUTOMATIC below. It is an Oris Modern Classic, reference 633 7490 4061LS, a Swiss automatic from a line since discontinued: a silver-white guilloche dial with applied baton indices, Arabic numerals at 12, 3 and 9, a date at six. No subdials, no rotating bezel, just a polished case and three hands, nothing to time, which is the point for a man who has stopped caring how he looks but still wears the watch he used to dress for. The afterlife is the strange part. A modest dress Oris that retailed as an ordinary three-hander now trades on the secondary market as the Constantine, a cult reference made entirely by one rumpled exorcist who never once used it to time anything.
