Kate Winslet, in a black dress with a glass of champagne in each hand, plays Iris Simpkins in The Holiday, Nancy Meyers' 2006 romantic comedy. Iris is a writer at a London newspaper, worn down by years of unrequited feeling for a colleague, Jasper, played by Rufus Sewell, who keeps her close without ever choosing her. To get away over Christmas she swaps her Surrey cottage for Amanda Woods's Los Angeles house, trading places with the American trailer producer played by Cameron Diaz. Jude Law and Jack Black play the men the two women meet at either end of the swap.
A single watch-spotting catalogue identifies Iris's watch as a Cartier Tank Solo, the plainest member of the Tank family, a clean rectangular case on a leather strap with a Roman numeral dial and none of the gold or diamonds of the dressier Tanks. The catalogue gives no reference and cites no source, and the watch does not read on screen in the frames available here, so the identification is plausible but unconfirmed. The Tank itself goes back to 1917, when Louis Cartier modeled its case on the Renault tanks of the First World War.
