Josh Hartnett wears an IWC Aquatimer

At 2:46 in the morning, Slevin Kelevra lays out his plan, and on his wrist is an IWC Aquatimer Chronograph, the reference 3719, in steel, with a black dial. Josh Hartnett's character has been mistaken for a man named Nick Fisher, and two rival bosses who run opposite ends of the same city want what Nick owes them: Morgan Freeman's The Boss and Ben Kingsley's The Rabbi.

The 3719 has an odd history and an odder bezel. For years IWC kept the Aquatimer name tucked inside a larger family it called GST, for gold, steel, and titanium. In 2004, two years before the film, it pulled the diver out into a line of its own, and this chronograph was part of that launch. Then there is the bezel. On most dive watches the rotating timing ring sits on the outside of the case. On the Aquatimer it sits under the crystal, an inner ring you turn with a second screw-down crown at four o'clock, and you can see it in the film as the band of minute markers just inside the dial. Behind it runs an automatic chronograph: steel bracelet, black dial, the small subdials of a stopwatch.

The watch does not stay on Slevin. Later the same IWC turns up on Nick Fisher, who checks it while sitting in a bus terminal, and later still Slevin closes a flap over the same watch, now on Nick's wrist. The man who wore it at 2:46, laying out his plan, was never named Slevin Kelevra. The name is a cover, the front end of a revenge years in the planning, run with an assassin named Goodkat.
