Michael Finkel is a real journalist who lost his job at the New York Times Magazine in 2002 after he was caught fabricating parts of a story. Not long after, he learned that Christian Longo, a fugitive wanted for murdering his wife and three children, had been arrested in Mexico while living under Finkel's name. Finkel turned the strange overlap into a book, and Rupert Goold adapted it in 2015 as his first feature, with Jonah Hill as Finkel and James Franco as Longo.
The watch on Hill's wrist is hard to see. The French site Montres-de-luxe, the only outlet to have looked, called it an IWC aviator chronograph, but it admitted that you guess at the watch more than see it. That matches what is on screen: in a scene where Finkel sits at a wooden table sorting through papers, a steel-cased watch with a dark dial rests at his cuff, too shadowed to read a model or even a chronograph's subdials.
