Christian Longo murdered his wife and three children in Oregon, fled to Mexico, and lived under the name of a New York Times journalist he had never met. That journalist was Michael Finkel, played by Jonah Hill in Rupert Goold's True Story (2015), and James Franco plays Longo as a man who is either genuinely remorseful or performing remorse so well that the distinction stops mattering. The film is based on Finkel's memoir about visiting Longo in prison and slowly realizing he was being manipulated.
In this courtroom image, Franco sits in a beige suit and striped tie, leaning forward to confer with someone behind the bench divider. The watch on his left wrist is clearly visible: a gold-toned dress watch with a white or cream dial on a brown leather strap. It has not been identified. The choice fits the character — Longo is a man obsessed with surfaces, someone who could destroy his family and then calmly inhabit another person's life without flinching.
