Jon Hamm wears a Rolex Submariner

Jon Hamm's Fletch is looser than Chevy Chase's version — less slapstick, more bemused confidence. In Greg Mottola's Confess, Fletch (2022), the investigative journalist arrives in Boston to find a dead body in the townhouse he's borrowing and becomes the prime suspect in a murder he obviously didn't commit. Hamm plays Fletch as a man who finds the whole situation genuinely funny, which irritates the detectives and charms everyone else. It's the kind of role Hamm was born for, and the film knows it.

The Rolex Submariner on his wrist is an interesting choice for a journalist. The Submariner has become the universal signifier of a certain type of successful man — wealthy enough to own one, practical enough to wear it daily — and on Fletch, it raises questions. Investigative reporters don't typically earn Submariner money. Fletch is probably not paying for it himself, which tracks with a character who borrows townhouses, talks his way into places he doesn't belong, and navigates a world of art dealers and Italian countesses with suspicious ease. The Submariner says Fletch is comfortable around money even if it isn't his.
