High in the Rockies, Eric Qualen's heist runs against a clock. John Lithgow plays him in Cliffhanger (1993) as the criminal mastermind whose stolen cash is scattered across the mountains, several suitcases of it, dropped from a crashed plane, and whose crew is racing to recover every one. When Qualen wants to know how the search is going, the film cuts to his wrist: a steel Hamilton chronograph filling the frame, black dial, three gold-ringed registers, TACHYMETER spelled out across the engraved bezel, a gloved hand pulling the khaki cuff clear.
The printed record of the watch is one line long. Cataloguing Hamilton's screen history for Worn & Wound in 2014, James Enloe wrote that "while searching for his loot, criminal mastermind Qualen checks his Hamilton quartz chronograph to see how they are doing against the clock." Hamilton is a company that calls itself The Movie Brand and runs its own Behind the Camera Awards, but neither the brand nor the watch press has ever named the model on Lithgow's wrist.
The insert shot narrows it down on its own. Every detail the frame makes legible, the spelled-out tachymeter bezel with its engraved scale, the gilt baton markers, the gold-ringed registers, the framed date aperture by the crown, matches Hamilton's 8800-series quartz chronograph of those years, sold as reference 8808, and surviving examples on the auction market wear exactly this black and gilt dial. The reference recorded here rests on that match, feature for feature, not on any printed source.
