Val Valenzuela is the bail bondsman who keeps Mickey Haller's client pipeline full. In the ecosystem of Los Angeles criminal defense, the bondsman is the middleman between jail and the courtroom, and John Leguizamo plays Val as a guy who knows exactly where he fits in that chain. Brad Furman directed The Lincoln Lawyer in 2011, adapting Michael Connelly's novel about a defense attorney who works from the back seat of a Lincoln Continental. Matthew McConaughey plays Haller, and it was one of the performances that started pulling his career out of the romantic comedy rut.
Leguizamo's Val is a supporting role but a necessary one. He's the one who brings Louis Roulet to Haller's door, the rich client played by Ryan Phillippe whose case turns out to be far more dangerous than it looks. Without Val making that introduction, the whole plot doesn't happen. Leguizamo plays him fast and funny, which is what the role needs. Val is a businessman, not a philosopher. His watch hasn't been identified.
