Joel Edgerton wears a Casio G-Shock GX-56

The water inside Tham Luang cave was zero visibility, and the divers navigated by touch, following a guideline through flooded passages so tight they sometimes removed their tanks to fit. Thirteen Lives (2022) is Ron Howard's account of the 2018 rescue of twelve boys and their soccer coach from the flooded cave in Thailand's Chiang Rai province, and Joel Edgerton plays Dr. Richard "Harry" Harris, the Australian anaesthetist and cave diver who joined the rescue as an active diver and helped devise its most desperate measure: sedate the boys with ketamine, fit each one with a full-face mask, and have divers carry them out through miles of submerged cave. Viggo Mortensen plays Rick Stanton, one of the lead British divers.

On Harris's wrist Edgerton wears a Casio G-Shock, and G-Central, the specialist site that tracks the brand, pinned it down: a GX-56, by its read the stealth-black GX-56BB-1 with the inverted LCD. The GX-56 is the brand's extra-large model, 55.5 millimeters across, solar powered, with Alpha Gel shock-absorbing material added inside the usual G-Shock armor. And the choice has a real-world echo. The real Richard Harris wears a G-Shock himself; he was photographed after the rescue with a smaller 5600-series model on his wrist, possibly a DW-5600 or GW-M5610. The film took a man who wears Casio's toughest watch in real life and handed him the biggest one in the catalog.
