Joe Pesci plays Tommy DeVito, a volatile gangster whose temper makes him useful and dangerous in equal measure to the Lucchese crew around Henry Hill. Martin Scorsese adapted Nicholas Pileggi's book about Hill's real life in organized crime, and Pesci won the Oscar for a performance built almost entirely on unpredictability. Tommy wants respect, can't handle the smallest perceived slight, and that's what gets him killed.
