The best Tom Clancy adaptations give their villains room to operate with intelligence. In Phillip Noyce's Clear and Present Danger (1994), Joaquim de Almeida plays Colonel Felix Cortez, a former Cuban intelligence officer working for a Colombian drug cartel who seduces a CIA secretary for information while Harrison Ford's Jack Ryan works through the political layers of a covert war. Willem Dafoe, Henry Czerny, and Miguel Sandoval round out the cast.
On Cortez's wrist is a Cartier Santos. Cartier built the original Santos in 1904 for the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, making it one of the first purpose-built wristwatches, and its square case with exposed bezel screws reads as European and expensive. In one scene a gold Santos on a matching bracelet is clearly visible on de Almeida's wrist, the right watch for a man who trades in seduction and manipulation rather than force.
