Jeff Goldblum wears a Rolex Milgauss

Jeff Goldblum had a Rolex Milgauss customized with a Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton engraved on the caseback. That is the kind of decision only Jeff Goldblum makes. Stylist Andrew Voterro worked with MAD Paris, an independent customization house, to coat the entire watch in black DLC and add Goldblum's character initials, "IM" for Ian Malcolm, above the chronometer text on the dial.

The base watch is a modern Milgauss, originally designed in 1956 for scientists and engineers working near strong magnetic fields. Its inner case contains a soft iron Faraday cage that shields the movement from up to 1,000 gauss. Rolex marketed it to researchers at CERN and power plants. Giving it to a chaos theorist in a dinosaur film is a stretch of the original brief, but the connection between Malcolm and laboratory science holds up well enough.

The green sapphire crystal survived the DLC treatment. MAD Paris blacked out everything else (case, bracelet, dial) but left that characteristic green tint intact. The result is a watch that reads as entirely murdered-out until you catch the light at the right angle and the crystal gives it away. Colin Trevorrow directed Dominion as the franchise's closing chapter, reuniting Goldblum with Sam Neill and Laura Dern from the 1993 original. Malcolm's custom Milgauss is one more piece of a character Goldblum has been refining for thirty years, and nobody else in the cast got anything close to this level of watch detail.
