Luc Besson's The Big Blue (1988) dramatizes the rivalry between freedivers Jacques Mayol and Enzo Maiorca, with Jean Reno playing a fictionalized version, Enzo Molinari: boisterous, competitive, doomed. The film drew more than nine million admissions in France and became a cultural touchstone in Europe.

Enzo wears a Citizen Aqualand JP2000, the analog-digital dive watch Citizen launched in 1985 as one of the first consumer wristwatch dive computers, with an electronic sensor that reads current and maximum depth on an LCD window, rated to 200 meters. Reno's is the black-coated titanium version with gold pushers. The watch is so tied to the film that Citizen reissued it for the Aqualand's fortieth anniversary, billing it as the Aqualand of Le Grand Bleu.
