Any Number Can Win (Melodie en sous-sol, 1963) is Henri Verneuil's heist film in which Charles (Jean Gabin), just out of prison, recruits the young Francis (Alain Delon) to rob the Palm Beach casino in Cannes. At 11:30 p.m., as his car pulls up, Charles checks his watch and the camera holds on it: a round watch with a cream dial, Arabic numerals, and a sub-dial complication, raised to the light. The maker is not legible in black and white, so it is catalogued as unidentified, but the close-up is unusually clear and is kept here as evidence toward an identification.
