Jason Statham wears a Panerai Luminor

Lee Christmas spends most of Expend4bles trying to earn his way back onto the team. After a job in Libya goes wrong and Barney Ross appears to die saving him, Christmas is pulled from the roster, and Jason Statham plays the rest of the film as a man working off a debt he cannot settle. He is the franchise's most dependable instrument, the one you point at a problem when the problem has a face and a knife. He tells Gina he might be complicated, but he is not hopeless.

The Panerai Luminor on his wrist is the rare screen prop you can name without a caption. Its signature is the lever bridge that clamps over the winding crown, a half-moon of steel Panerai patented in the 1950s to seal water out of the case, and in the shot where Christmas raises his rifle the bridge sits unmistakable against the black dial. The brand made its name arming the combat divers of the Italian Navy, men who needed a watch that kept working when everything around them was trying to kill them. On Statham, that reads less like a fashion choice than a job description.
