Operation Anthropoid was the code name for the killing of Reinhard Heydrich, the SS officer who governed occupied Bohemia and Moravia and chaired the Wannsee Conference that organized the Holocaust. Two soldiers of the Czechoslovak army-in-exile, the Czech Jan Kubiš and the Slovak Jozef Gabčík, parachuted into their occupied homeland and, in May 1942, ambushed Heydrich's open-topped Mercedes as it slowed at a hairpin bend in Prague. Gabčík's Sten gun jammed, and it was Kubiš who threw the grenade that wounded Heydrich, who died of the infection days later. Both men were dead within weeks, killed in the siege of the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius. Sean Ellis's Anthropoid (2016) follows the mission from the parachute drop to that last gunfight, with Jamie Dornan as Kubiš and Cillian Murphy as Gabčík.

The film lingers on the men's wrists, giving clear close-ups of both watches. The costume blog BAMF Style, going frame by frame, reads the one on Kubiš as a Swiss-made Doxa, from the Le Locle firm founded in 1889. But BAMF dates the prop on Dornan's wrist to the early 1950s, roughly a decade after the assassination the film recreates. The brand suits a Central European soldier of the period; the watch itself is postwar, and its model has never been identified.
