Operation Anthropoid was the code name for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the highest-ranking Nazi official killed during World War II. Sean Ellis's 2016 film follows the two Czech soldiers who carried it out: Jozef Gabcik (Cillian Murphy) and Jan Kubis (Jamie Dornan), parachuted into occupied Prague by the British in December 1941.
Murphy wears a stainless steel dress watch with a beige dial, Arabic numeral indices, and a black leather strap. The maker hasn't been identified, though Dornan's Kubis wears a Swiss-made Doxa. A steel dress watch is the right choice for a soldier living under a false identity in occupied Prague. Gabcik had to pass as a civilian while planning the attack. On May 27, 1942, his Sten gun jammed at the moment of assassination. Kubis threw a modified anti-tank grenade into Heydrich's open-top Mercedes. Heydrich died eight days later. The Nazis razed the village of Lidice in retaliation, killing all its men and deporting the women and children to concentration camps.
