Safety Last! (1923) is the Harold Lloyd comedy whose image of him dangling from a clock face high above the street became one of silent cinema's most famous shots. Before the climb, Lloyd's eager small-town clerk, the Boy, is forever checking the time as he tries to make good in the city. Early one morning he pulls out his pocket watch, an open-faced Elgin with a white enamel dial, Arabic numerals, and a small seconds register, the maker's name plain beneath twelve. It is the modest American watch of a young man counting every minute toward his main chance.
