James Munroe is the suit of The Expendables. A former CIA officer, he keeps General Garza's dictatorship on the island of Vilena running as a front for his own profiteering, has Sandra waterboarded when he wants information, shoots Garza when the general stops being useful, and is finally killed by Barney Ross and Lee Christmas. Eric Roberts plays him in a pinstriped suit and tie, and by the final battle the suit is gray with dust.
Roberts had been working for a long time before this movie found him. His first Golden Globe nomination came for King of the Gypsies in 1978, another followed for Star 80, and an Academy Award nomination arrived for Runaway Train in 1985. After that came the volume: more than 700 screen credits, including 74 films in the single year of 2017, which makes him one of the most prolific English-speaking actors ever to work. The Expendables landed in year 32 of that run.
In the climax, crouched in the rubble beside Paine with the dust still on his suit, Munroe shows a watch on his left wrist: a round case in polished steel, a pale dial, a dark strap, sliding out from under a white shirt cuff. It is plainly visible and not remotely legible: no brand shows in the frame, and no publication, forum, or prop database has ever put a name on it.
