In a marble lobby in Guy Ritchie's In the Grey, Eiza González holds a phone to her ear, a gold watch on her wrist, while her co-stars Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal stand behind her. She plays Rachel Wild, who runs the negotiations for a crew hired to claw a fortune back out of dangerous hands. The watch is small and rectangular, a pink gold case ridged at top and bottom, riding flat against her arm. Those ridges, the gadroons, are how a Reverso announces itself.
It is a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, and the rectangle is the whole idea. Jaeger-LeCoultre built the first one in 1931 for British officers playing polo in India, who kept smashing their watch crystals: the case slides and turns over in its cradle so the dial faces down and a wall of blank metal takes the blow. This is the Reverso Classic Medium Duetto, 40 by 24.4 millimeters, and it spends that protection. Where the original turned a closed metal back to the world, the Duetto fills that side with a second dial, a dressier evening face that tells the same time as the first. By Watching.gr's account, which logged the film's watches, González wears the pink gold version with its reverse set in diamonds, reference Q2572570, about 34,600 dollars.
So a watch first built to hide its face now carries two faces, and here only the plain one shows. The diamond side that Watching.gr describes stays turned down against her wrist, out of the frame.
