Yesterday imagines a world where the Beatles never existed, and Ed Sheeran, playing himself, becomes the biggest songwriter alive by default. The casting was almost an accident. The cameo was written for Chris Martin, who passed on it. What Sheeran brought to the part, besides himself, was his watch collection. He is one of the more committed collectors in music, with a reported six-million-dollar shelf of Patek Philippe and Richard Mille, and when a French watch magazine spotted an IWC Big Pilot on his wrist in the film, it drew the obvious conclusion: he had worn his own.

He owns one, reportedly given to him for his twenty-second birthday, so the guess is a safe one. The Big Pilot is a strange watch to find on a pop star. It is 46mm of steel with a seven-day power reserve, and it descends from an observation watch IWC built for the Luftwaffe in 1940, the cone-shaped crown sized to be wound while wearing flight gloves. In another scene the same magazine caught an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept on him, and figured that one was his too.
