General Hummel is the rare action movie villain who has a point. Ed Harris plays him in Michael Bay's The Rock as a decorated Marine who seizes Alcatraz Island and threatens San Francisco with stolen VX gas — not for money or ideology, but because the government won't acknowledge the Marines who died in covert operations or compensate their families. The Victorinox on his wrist is consistent with that characterization. A Swiss Army watch, practical and unpretentious, the kind of piece a career military officer actually wears.

Victorinox makes watches the way they make knives: functional, reliable, not concerned with luxury signaling. Hummel doesn't need a Rolex. He's spent thirty years in service and his grievance is genuine. Harris plays the role with real anguish, and the no-frills watch reinforces that this is a man of principle pushed past his limit, not a psychopath enjoying destruction.
