The post-9/11 revenge fantasy has its own subgenre by now, and American Assassin (2017) is a straight-down-the-middle entry. Michael Cuesta directed this adaptation of Vince Flynn's novel, with Dylan O'Brien as Mitch Rapp, a young man whose fiancee is killed in a terrorist attack on a beach resort. He spends eighteen months training himself to infiltrate terrorist cells before the CIA recruits him and puts him under Michael Keaton's Stan Hurley, a burned-out Cold War operative who teaches him to channel the rage into something useful.
O'Brien's watch is visible in the cafe scene: a dark-dialed piece on a dark strap, small and tactical-looking, consistent with a field watch. The brand has not been identified. For a character who is supposed to be deep undercover in hostile territory, it is appropriately anonymous — the kind of watch you would wear specifically because nobody would look at it twice.
