American Assassin opens on the worst day of Mitch Rapp's life and never really eases up. Dylan O'Brien plays Rapp, a young man who loses his fiancee in a terrorist attack on a beach and trains himself into a one-man war before the CIA pulls him in. In a quieter stretch, sitting across a cafe table from a contact with small glasses of tea between them, the camera catches the watch on his wrist, a dressy steel watch with a dark dial on a dark strap, half hidden behind the tea.
It is most often identified as a Hamilton Jazzmaster, and the dress-watch shape on screen fits, though the brand never reads clearly enough on camera to be sure. It would be an unsurprising choice. Hamilton has spent decades as one of Hollywood's most placed watch brands, an American name now made in Switzerland that turns up on more wrists in more films than most viewers ever notice, the Jazzmaster being its clean and affordable dress line. On a newly minted operative still learning to pass unnoticed in rooms like this one, a plain Hamilton is exactly the kind of watch that asks you not to look twice.
