Luke Hobbs enters the Fast and Furious franchise in Fast Five as the man sent to bring Dominic Toretto and Brian O'Conner in, a Diplomatic Security Service agent chasing two fugitives through Rio de Janeiro after they are framed for the deaths of three DEA agents. Dwayne Johnson plays him in black tactical gear with a carbine shouldered, and on his raised left wrist sits a Panerai Luminor Submersible, the studded dive bezel and cushion case easy to make out in the promotional photographs. By the end of the film Hobbs has stopped hunting the crew and joined their heist.

The brand was spotted before the film opened. A pre-release look at the promotional photography had a Panerai on Johnson's wrist by mid-April 2011, and the watch press settled on the Luminor Submersible. The exact version never got settled. Dealer write-ups describe a 44 millimeter titanium case with a clous de Paris hobnail dial, and a guessed reference number has circulated on aggregator sites for years, but the strongest sources stop at the model line.

Fast Five is the film where Universal deliberately turned the series away from street racing and toward heists, with Justin Lin directing a Chris Morgan script and Puerto Rico standing in for most of Rio. The target is a hundred million dollars of a drug lord's cash sitting in a police evidence vault, and Hobbs spends most of the film trying to stop the people he ends up helping. Paul Walker's O'Conner wears a Jaeger-LeCoultre dive watch through the same story, identified in the same pre-release coverage, which put watches from two Richemont houses on opposite sides of the chase.
