G.I. Joe: Retaliation rebooted a stalled franchise by clearing the deck. Jon M. Chu's 2013 sequel kills off Channing Tatum's Duke in the first act and hands the movie to Dwayne Johnson's Roadblock, the team's heavy-weapons man. Johnson spends much of it behind a belt-fed machine gun, and in one firefight the camera catches what is on his wrist.
It is a Panerai Luminor chronograph. Over the winding crown sits the hinged steel lever that clamps it shut, the locking bridge Panerai built into the Luminor case for the frogmen of the Italian navy, and the one feature that marks a Panerai at a glance. The case under it is a wide steel cushion, the dial black and carrying chronograph registers. The watch sites name it the Luminor Daylight Chronograph, reference PAM00356 by SwissWatchExpo's reckoning, a smooth-bezel version of the model.
The casting is not a stretch. Dwayne Johnson wears Panerai off screen and has put one on before, in Fast Five, so a Luminor on a Special Forces soldier reads as much like the actor's own taste as the costume department's. The Luminor case was built to keep a winding crown sealed against the pressure of a combat dive. Strapped to a man firing a machine gun in the dirt, it is at least close to the work it was made for.
