At a formal breakfast table laid with silver and porcelain, Franklin Reinhart reaches for the paper with a watch half-hidden at his cuff, his daughter Grace beside him in silence. Donald Sutherland plays Reinhart in The Undoing, the 2020 HBO limited series, the immensely rich father whose money and certainty hang over a Manhattan murder case that swallows his daughter's marriage.

Reinhart is old wealth as a force of gravity, a man who solves problems by buying or burying them, and Sutherland plays him with the soft menace of someone who has never once been told no. The watch barely shows, tucked beneath a tailored sleeve and turned from the light, the discreet piece of a man whose class never advertises, so no maker can be read and the brand stays unidentified.

It suits him. Reinhart is the figure in the series with the most power and the least need to display it, and his watch keeps to the same rule, present and expensive and entirely unwilling to say so.
